Burt Rutan
The dictionary defines "visionary" as "one who indulges in fanciful theories," and while Burt Rutan certainly does that, he also turns those theories into flying machines. From canards to composites, his theories have changed the way airplanes look and function.

Elbert L. (Burt) Rutan was born at Dinuba, California on June 17, 1943. As a schoolboy he designed award winning model aircraft and learned to fly at age sixteen. In 1965, he received his aeronautical engineering degree from California Polytechnic University and began a career as a civilian flight test engineer at Edwards AFB, California for the United States Air Force. After leaving the Air Force in 1974, after two years designing and developing the Bede BD-J5 he formed RAF, the Rutan Aircraft Factory Rutan launched his first private company, Rutan Aircraft Factory to market his light aircraft design. For the next 10 years, he shaped the landscape of homebuilt aircraft with the VariViggen, VariEz, Quickie, Defiant, Long-EZ, Grizzly, Solitaire and Catbird. In 1982, Rutan founded Scaled Composites, Inc. and developed prototypes of seven aircraft including the Beech Starship.
Elbert L. (Burt) Rutan werd geboren in Dinuba, California op 17 juni 1943. As schooljongen ontworp hij al prijswinnende model vliegtuigjes en leerde vliegen op zijn 16e. In 1965 behaalde hij zijn vliegtuigbouwkundig ingenieurs diploma op de universiteit van California en begon zijn loopbaan als testengineer voor de burgerluchtvaart bij de luchtmacht op de luchtmacht basis Edwards. Na het verlaten van de luchtmacht in 1974, en na 2 jaar ontwerpen en ontwikkelen van de Bede BD-J5 richtte hij de firma RAF op. De naam staat voor Rutan Aircraft Factory, met deze firma begon hij zijn lichte vliegtuig op de markt te brengen. In de volgende 10 jaar legde hij de fundamenten van de zelfbouw markt met vliegtuigen als: VariViggen, VariEz, Quickie, Defiant, Long-EZ, Grizzly, Solitaire en Catbird. In 1982 richtte hij scaled composites op en stopte definitief met de zelfbouw markt. De Amerikaanse cultuur, iedereen voor elk wisse wasje voor de rechtbank slepen, had hem het werken onmogelijk gemaakt.
Burt Rutan's genius extends to aerodynamic design, the application of new materials and the inspiration to visualize beyond established limits. Burt Rutan's designs are characterized by the use of lightweight composite materials, innovation, which is akin to the transition in aircraft construction from wood and fabric to metal. The crowning achievement of RAF was the 1986 Voyager around-the-world flight piloted by Burt's brother Dick.
On December 23, 1986, Rutan's Voyager aircraft returned to its starting point at Mojave, California completing a twenty five thousand mile and two hundred sixteen hour non-stop and unrefueled around the world flight, the first in history. The latest Scaled project is the Proteus, named for the Greek god who could change shape to take on any form.

Rutan’s ontwerpen worden gekarakteriseerd door het toepassen van lichtgewicht materiaal. Een innovatie die gelijk staat aan de overgang van de ontwerpen, van met hout bespannen doek naar de lichtgewicht aluminium constructie.
